The mission of Asbestos Facts Canada is to educate and inform Canadians about the dangers and presence of asbestos in their lives and to assist victims of Mesothelioma and other asbestos related diseases in getting maximum support and compensation for what asbestos has done to them.
Canada has historically been a leading miner and exporter of the deadly mineral asbestos. In Canada, asbestos use is banned due to its dangers but until recently the Governments of Canada and Quebec continued to allow this killer to be exported to less developed countries where it is commonly used with no safeguards at all. Recently, in 2012 after a change of Government in Quebec to no longer support the industry, the Harper Government backed off its support for asbestos. With the recent election of the Liberal Government of Justin Trudeau Canada is less likely to ever return to being an asbestos producer or exporter. Most of the world's asbestos supply now comes from Russia. In Canada, thousands of people die every year from serious cancers like Mesothelioma, a cancer which can only be caused by exposure to asbestos. Mesothelioma can develop up to 50 years after exposure to asbestos and is almost always fatal. There is asbestos still in many buildings and its removal is usually more dangerous than leaving it in place. Removal can let microscopic fibres out in the air to be inhaled and cause death by Mesothelioma Cancer many years later. Mesothelioma used to be considered rare but diagnosis of Mesothelioma is becoming more common across Canada. In this website we will provide facts about asbestos from a Canadian point of view.
